Local Go-Tos With Adam Green, Brianna Lance, Nikki Kynard & Others
We asked friends of GrandLife to share their favorite NYC stores and what they love about them. Here’s what they told us…
Our Locals segment is a treasure trove of insider tips, offering insights into New Yorker’s preferred haunts—the places they frequent for a meal, happy hour drink, vintage find, new record, or whatever it is that keeps them going back time and time again.
Here, we revisit interviews with Brianna Lance, Adam Green, Nikki Kynard, David Godlis, Tali Lennox, and others, and share their responses to the question, “What are some of your favorite New York stores, and what do you love about them?” Here’s what they told us…
Brianna Lance, Creative Director, Artist, Musician
“I have a vintage shopping problem so my enablers are Edith Machinist, Ritual Vintage, and 9th Street Haberdashery.”
Nikki Kynard, DJ
“The RealReal, Dobbin Street Co-op, Freebird Books & Goods, Greenery Unlimited, A1 Records, Academy Records, Sincerely Tommy.”
Adam Green, Singer-Songwriter, Artist, & Filmmaker
“My favorite store is Strand Bookstore—I love to look at art books and they have so many upstairs. It’s like mind control shopping at a new bookstore because everything currently being printed is part of a trend. A good way to subvert the trend is by shopping at a used bookstore.”
Anouk Colantoni, Artist
“Vintage shopping: Amarcord, The Break, Mirth Greenpoint, Awoke; Homecoming for plants, beautiful incense, books, body oils, and coffee; Maryam Nassir Zadeh for all her garments and objects; furniture at Dobbin St. Co-op; ABC Home for absolutely everything; No. 6 clothing and accessories; Journelle lingerie—I love lace panties, yes I do; BIRD for clothing and accessories; The Strand for books; Coming Soon for absolutely everything design that I love and want in my home—cool and chic and all with a fun sense of humor.”
David Godlis, Photographer
“Dashwood Books, and the Tenement Museum bookshop.”
Illyse Singer, Cinema Curator
“I love Sprout for plant shopping, and Enchantments is great for necessary magic purchases. Having a go-to magic store is normal, right? The Criterion Closet—I know it’s not really a store, but getting to go in there and pick out films is maybe one of the best things you can do.”
Anna Sheffield, Jewelry Designer & Entrepreneur
“Coming Soon, Brooklyn Baby Cakes, Oroboro, The Future Perfect, Hesperios, Narnia Vintage….”
Johan Kugelberg, Archivist
“Di Palo’s for cheese and the finest chicken cutlets; Pop’s Army and Navy for lasting threads; Captured Tracks; Academy and Human Head for jamz.”
Tali Lennox, Artist
“Ritual has some great vintage; the 25th Street flea market—lots of trinkets and treasures but you have to have a dig; John Derian Company has the most exquisite homeware and decor pieces; Mast Bookstore has a beautiful selection of second-hand books with wonderful covers— one of my favorite finds there is 1960s Aquarian Odyssey; Alchemist Kitchen is a nice place to go for healthy potions—it calms me down especially after an infrared sauna downstairs or an IV vitamin drip.”
