Cabin, the Cabin, or the Cabin Down Below—this semi-secret East Village basement bar on the corner of 7th Street and Avenue A is once again the place to go for a late-night drink. Opened in 2009 by Matt Romano (from Albert Hammond Jr’s solo project) and East Village punk mainstay Jesse Malin, Cabin fast became the place to be, that is if you could find the hidden entrance, and even then, get your name on the door list. Once considered “the Strokes Bar” due to the heavy frequency of local musicians, Cabin’s rock and roll essence has been revived in its original location, accessible through Tompkins Square Bar. The vibe is intimate, the lights are dim, and the drinks are strong.
