COMME DES GARCONS
Don’t let the auto repair shop sign out front fool you. The 5,000-square-foot intergalactic architectural wonderland, Tokyo-based Comme des Garçons lies beneath that sign—and behind a nondescript brick facade in the Chelsea gallery district. Travel into the “portal” like a bridge into space, to the end of an aluminum tunnel and discover a mecca of perfectly structured luxury apparel by Japanese designers Rei Kawakubo and Junya Watanabe. This stark, futuristic cave provides the perfect environment for their “wearable art.”
Architectural pants, elaborate evening jackets encrusted with interior frills, fresh striped shirts and jewel-colored velvets all hover within the all-white, undulating modules. The space also includes a stainless steel perfume bar with over 200 fragrances, which have included collaborations by the likes of Daphne Guinness, and H&M in the past. Things are always changing here but one thing never will: New York’s fashionable elite will always be diehards for the latest creations at this Westside hotspot.
