WHAT WOULD THE TITLE OF YOUR AUTOBIOGRAPHY BE?
“Curiosity Killed the Cat”
WHAT CAN’T YOU TRAVEL WITHOUT AND WHY?
Something clever to read. And music.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE TRAVEL DESTINATION?
I will never say no to Paris.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO ON A SUNDAY AFTERNOON IN NYC?
Get lost in Chinatown.
WHO WOULD YOU CHOOSE TO SHOW YOU “THEIR” NEW YORK CITY?
Yoko Ono.
WHO HAS INSPIRED YOU RECENTLY?
To me, the artists, musicians, designer and other creative types who inhabit NYC are all the muse I’ll ever need. Plus Caroline de Maigret, Lou Doillon, Carla Bruni, and Carine Roitfeld, and writers like Colette, Charles Bukowski, Anthony Haden-Guest, Judith Thurman, and Gay Talese. Patti Smith and Joan Didion have some pretty great ideas, too.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE NYC RESTAURANTS?
Lucky Strike, Café Select, Omen, and The Spotted Pig.
WHAT’S YOUR GO-TO SPOT IN NYC FOR DRINKS?
I like sitting at the bar at Wise Men on the Bowery, and Satsko on Avenue B is a neighborhood spot with good sake. But the lounge behind Toro restaurant is my latest favorite.
FAVORITE NYC BRUNCH SPOTS?
Clinton Street Baking Company, Balthazar on weekdays, and you must try the Filipino spot in my neighborhood called Jeepney – get the bone marrow or the purple pancakes and the Boracay shake.
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR UNDER THE RADAR MUST-DO NYC RECOMMENDATIONS?
Walk down Perry Street in the West Village. Visit the Highline in the late afternoon. Go to the Clic Bookstore & Gallery in Soho. Get a massage at a (non-shady) Chinese spot in the Lower East Side. Visit the Classic Car Club of Manhattan on Hudson Street to see cool vintage cars.
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE NYC STORES, AND WHY?
Opening Ceremony, of course. Jeffrey. Acne. Myers of Keswick is really fun for obscure British things.
WHAT MUSIC ARE YOU LISTENING TO THESE DAYS, AND WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE MUSICIANS?
I generally like all kinds of music, but lately I’ve been listening to Wale, Kendrick Lamar, NERVO, Carla Bruni, Robyn, Grimes, and Tupac. I also listen to a lot of SoundCloud mixes by New York-based DJs.
WHEN YOU THINK OF NYC, ARE THERE ANY PARTICULAR MEMORIES THAT COME TO MIND?
I remember when I walked into my first apartment in New York that I had a real feeling of disbelief that I was allowed to live here. I couldn’t believe I didn’t have to pass a test or pay a fee or something to live in such a great place with such interesting people. I still have that feeling.
